Singer-songwriter Demi Lovato, 24, has been using her voice for mental health advocacy. Lovato has been an advocate for addiction and bipolar diagnosis for years. She is now choosing to step back from the spotlight for a bit to switch the focus to tell others’ stories.
According to huffingtonpost.com, Lovato is releasing a documentary that tells others’ stories to continue to spread awareness.
“It’s important for me to open up a new chapter in my life,” she told The Huffington Post. “I’ve shared a lot about my past and my experiences with my mental health condition and it’s important that now it’s about other people. I want to raise their voice as well.”
Just a week ago, Lovato took to her Instagram account to post a video on her “Beyond Silence” documentary, which features a brief introduction to the message they are trying to spread.
Lovato captioned her video by saying:
“Today we are premiering Beyond Silence, a #BeVocalSpeakUp documentary that shows how the power of one voice can inspire and help so many others. We follow three different people –Jeff, Lauren and Lloyd – whose lives have changed by speaking up for mental health. Watch the documentary at BeVocalSpeakUp.com and help us spread the word!”
“Beyond Silence” will be a documentary about three people who have battled with mental health issues all their lives, and who have finally come to terms with it and decided to let others know they are not alone. Lovato will be taking on a new role as executive producer of the documentary, differing from her usual on-screen roles.
According to huffingtonpost.com, Lovato revealed:
“These stories really stick out to me. I’m very excited that people are going to be able to hear about their journeys.”
Lovato has been involved with the campaign, Be Vocal: Speak Up For Mental Health, since 2015 when it was launched by the National Alliance for Mental Illness, the Jed Foundation, Mental Health America, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and the National Council for Behavioral Health.
Although Lovato is currently stepping away from the spotlight to let other people’s voices be heard, she doesn’t intend on silencing out her own voice completely.
“It feels great to be a role model for this cause because I’m just being myself,” she said. “There’s no burden. As an advocate, it’s something that I’m passionate about.”
Lovato also aspires to encourage other people do speak out about their own experiences, or at least seek support, by continuing to speak about her own.
“The biggest surprise for me is how many people are afraid to talk about mental health,” she said. “Therapy is something everyone should try. I think that whether you have a mental health condition or not it’s good to talk to somebody ― especially someone who is a licensed professional.”
Many people can easily assume that celebrities live a perfect life, which is untrue for many, especially Lovato. Fortunately, she is thrilled that she can use her fan base to promote her campaign that is for a great cause. Also, people can see that they can still be successful in their careers, and have mental issues.
“Wellness is not just about being happy,” she said. “It’s about taking care of yourself and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health.”
